HISTORY OF THE MARATHON

Ireland’s new marathon fixture, which in 2010 became the second largest inaugural marathon ever in Ireland’s history, truly offers something for everyone! The three options on the day include a fully certified Marathon, a Half Marathon and a 10K event.

The three events commence over a staggered start schedule. The Marathon enters the city on no less than four occasions which helps to generate great support for the athletes. The route has been carefully designed to incorporate the many sporting and historic highpoints in Limerick including the city centre’s Georgian architecture, the world famous University of Limerick, King Johns Castle, The Treat Stone and Thomond Park. Parts of the route also follow the River Shannon.

The majority of both participants and spectators are from Munster.
